Funky chairs are a great way to liven up an otherwise boring, empty corner of a living room. Choose an eye-catching design for this functional piece of furniture to make a statement.
A bright, vibrant coloured chair will add a splash of colour, while stylish, well-designed designer pieces become a talking point (as well as a place to sit, of course.)
Here are five of our favourite funky chairs:
1) Naoko Armchairs – Habitat.
Naoko Kanehira’s “Naoko” armchairs from Habitat look funky, but they’re also beautifully designed – you’re essentially sitting on a stack of soft cushions with legs attached. Bliss!
Although quirky, the Naoko’s design isn’t too outlandish – but it still makes a statement. Unlike some contemporary style chairs that can look uncomfortable, the Naoko looks plush and inviting.
My personal favourite is the grey and yellow design, but the Naoko comes in a range of other colours and prints too.
2) Diamond-Weave Chair – Anthopologie
I’m a huge fan of Anthropologie and it continues to be one of my favourite shops for both home wares and clothing. When searching online for funky chairs, I knew I’d find one or two at Anthro, and I wasn’t disappointed. Their diamond-weave chair is a quality piece created from mango wood and recycled cotton.
I just love the vibrant teal colour of the weave, I think this chair will look wonderful in a modern, bright and airy sitting room. I can also see it in a summer room or conservatory. Anthropologie recommends pairing the diamond-weave chair with a gilded side table or flokati rug.
3) Nautica Rattan Hanging Chair – The White Company
This hanging chair by The White Company is a real investment piece. It’s a sturdy chair that can withstand up to 150kg of weight, and it is handcrafted in Spain by professionals with a strong pedigree of rattan furniture making.
It’s an airy piece, inspired by the reflection of light on crashing waves, making it ideal for a light-filled conservatory or garden room.
4) Black Masters Chairs by Philippe Starck – Graham & Green
Like Anthropologie, I know Graham and Green will never let me down when it comes to finding funky pieces of furniture for eclectic-style homes.
As soon as I saw these black chairs by Philippe Starck, I fell in love. The interweaving backrest design is beautiful, slender and simple.
I can see these sleek, modern chairs in an understated room contrasted with cream pieces from the same designer. They’d also work well in rooms opting for an industrial-chic style.
5) Charles Eames Style RAR Rocking Chair in Plastic from Interior Addict
If you’re looking for funky chairs with a touch of retro charm, this piece by Charles Eames really fits the bill. The RAR rocking chair is based on Charles Eames’ original design from 1948. It features a clean, simple, organic design and is available in a number of colours (for both upholstery and wood rockers.)
Despite Eames originally designing the original RAR Rocking Chair over fifty years ago, the bright and vibrant plastic seat still feels modern today. It’s uncomplicated design makes it a timeless piece that will still look amazing in fifty years from now.
